Meet the Cohort 2 Interns

Abi Chinn, Climate Health Risk Tool Intern

B.Sc. Intended Informatics Major, Urban Planning and Design Minor, UW Seattle

Abi Chinn (she/her) comes to the EarthLab from the University of Washington Seattle campus where she is hoping to study Informatics, specifically focusing on Human-Computer Interaction and Data Science. After learning about the ways in which Informatics can drive positive change and create a more equitable and inclusive society, Abi wants to serve people from a technological standpoint by being attentive and addressing ways people are and can be oppressed and ignored by technology through its information and design. With CHanGE, Abi is excited to get the opportunity to create tangible and real-world effects by helping people reduce health risks from global environmental change.

Aileen Kuang, Climate Health Risk Tool Intern

B.Sc. Informatics & B.A. Geography, Minor in English, UW Seattle

Aileen Kuang (she/they) is an upcoming sophomore pursuing Informatics and Geography: Data Science at the University of Washington. Growing up in South Seattle, she recognized the socioeconomic disparities in health and the urban environment, and she became passionate about finding community-based solutions to environmental justice issues. After she took classes in Informatics and Geography departments at UW, she grew interested in combining her social justice and mutual aid work to UI/UX and data visualization. Aileen is excited to be joining EarthLab as a Climate Health Risk Tool intern with the Center for Health and the Global Environment (CHanGE).

Alex Crabtree, Conservation Science Intern

B.Sc. Biology, Minor in Urban Ecological Design, UW Seattle

Alex Crabtree (she/her) comes to EarthLab from the University of Washington Seattle where she is studying Biology and minoring in Urban Ecological Design. She feels lucky to have grown up in Washington, where she has developed a deep appreciation for the forests and the natural world. She hopes to be able to contribute to the conservation of native plant and animal species as well as foster the connection between humans and the natural environment. In her free time, Alex enjoys exploring Seattle, baking, and watching movies!

Amy Flores, Nature & Health Policy Intern

B.Sc. Public Health-Global Health, UW Seattle

Amy FloresAmy Flores (she/her) is a graduate from the UW Seattle Department of Public Health-Global Health. She has always been very interested in studying the effects the changing climate has on health. During her coursework at UW, she became very passionate about environmental health and justice and mitigating the effects of climate change in vulnerable, and marginalized communities. In her free time she loves spending time in nature and exploring all the Pacific Northwest has to offer through hiking and biking.

Caitlin Soler, Storytelling for Social Change Intern

B.A. Public Health-Global Health, Minors in Nutrition and Public Policy, UW Seattle

Caitlin SolerCaitlin Soler (she/they) joins EarthLab from the University of Washington, where she’s studying Public Health-Global Health with minors in Nutrition and Public Policy. She is excited to work with EarthLab’s Communications team as the Storytelling for Social Change Intern. Caitlin is passionate about developing accessible forms of health communication, especially in amplifying and disseminating new research. They also aspire to build community-based collaborations centered around equity and social justice. Caitlin enjoys reading, movies, and exploring Seattle in their free time.

Caitlin showcases EarthLab’s story by supporting its social media strategy and channel engagement. She works to build EarthLab’s digital story bank so it can better amplify the voices of partners, students, and communities. They also aim to create engaging and accessible content to disseminate member organizations’ research findings.

Isabella Garrido, Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Studies, Minor in Spanish, UW Seattle

Isabella Garrido (she/her) is an upcoming senior studying Environmental Studies with a minor in Spanish at the University of Washington. During her time at UW, she became passionate about environmental justice and closing the gap between scientists and minority populations. She hopes to help increase climate resilience in frontline communities, similar to the one she grew up in. Isabella is excited to be working with Climate Impacts Group as the Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative Intern.

Josephine Grell, Ocean Literacy Intern

B.Sc. Marine Biology, Minor in Climate Science, UW Seattle

Josephine GrellJosephine Grell (she/her/hers) is a senior at the University of Washington studying Marine Biology with a minor in Climate Science. She is excited to be working with the Washington Ocean Acidification Center and Earthlab this summer as this year’s Ocean Literacy Intern. Growing up in Oakland, California, right off the San Francisco Bay, her passion for marine sciences started at a very young age. Through her time at UW including her research internships and her work as a camp counselor, her love for science education has flourished. Josephine is passionate about environmental justice, climate solutions, and marine ecology. In her free time, she loves to tidepool, read, boulder, and spend time with the people she loves. She is eager to work with WOAC and Earthlab to develop a middle-school lesson plan on something she is so passionate about.

Katie Thomas, Conservation Science Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Science and Resource Management, Minor in Spanish & Quantitative Science, UW Seattle

Katie is an upcoming senior studying Environmental Science and Resource Management with minors in Spanish and Quantitative Science at the University of Washington Seattle Campus. This summer she is very excited to work with The Nature Conservancy as the Conservation Science intern for EarthLab. Through her courses at UW she has become passionate about restoration work and creating sustainable development, especially within forestry and agriculture while focusing on the principles of environmental justice and the local stakeholders involved. After graduating in 2024, she hopes to gain research experience in restoration work before pursuing a master’s degree in environmental and forest sciences. In my free time she enjoys hiking, beach volleyball, exploring Seattle with friends and crafting!

Maddy Chriest, Ocean Acidification Internship

B.Sc. Oceanography, Minor in Chemistry, UW Seattle

Maddy ChriestMadeline Chriest (she/her) is a student at the University of Washington, Seattle, where she is majoring in oceanography with a minor in chemistry. She is passionate about how the integration of oceanography, chemistry, and technology can inform decisions about climate change. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with WOAC and learn more about ocean acidification. In her free time, she enjoys reading and writing.

Rohini Achal, Nature and Health Policy Intern

B.A. Public Health – Global Health, Minor in Public Policy, UW Seattle

Rohini Achal (she/her) is an aspiring public health practitioner, joining EarthLab as a Nature and Health Policy Intern within the Nature and Health team. She is currently studying Public Health – Global Health with a minor in Public Policy at the University of Washington, Seattle. Rohini is passionate about public health policies and programs that are focused on interactions with nature. She also enjoys reading non-fiction books in her spare time.

Sophie Li, Climate Health Risk Tool Intern

B.Sc. Public Health-Global Health, Minor in Informatics, UW Seattle

Sophie LiSophie Li (she/her) is an incoming senior studying Public Health-Global Health with a minor in Informatics. She is excited to join EarthLab as a Climate Health Risk Tool intern with the Center for Health and the Global Environment (CHanGE). Sophie is passionate about the intersections between population and environmental health, and aspires to use data-driven approaches to pinpoint underlying causes for health inequities. In the future, she hopes to pursue a master’s degree in public health to continue exploring how research and subsequent interventions can facilitate access to health-promoting resources.

Sophie is working to improve the Climate and Health Risk Tool alongside a team of health practitioners, computer scientists, and stakeholders representing a wide range of disciplines. She is helping to review the public health literature, develop new workflows for the tool, and refine guidance on reducing public health risks from extreme heat to ultimately mitigate adverse health outcomes.
