A Collaborative Approach Preparing and Protecting At-Risk Communities from the Impacts of Climate Change in North-Central Washington
November 2024 Final Update
November 2023 Update
Awarded Project Overview
April 2023
Rural communities in north-central Washington are grappling with some of the most severe climate impacts, including wildfires, smoke exposure, and extreme heat. During the summer of 2021, this region endured unprecedented challenges, including heavy smoke and record-breaking temperatures. Yet, outreach and engagement with vulnerable populations on mitigating these health impacts remain limited.
This project seeks to address the communication gap around smoke exposure’s health effects. It defines at-risk groups as those highly susceptible to the health consequences of smoke from wildfires and prescribed burns, as well as those lacking resources to adapt effectively. Currently, messaging to these populations is minimal, culturally and linguistically unresponsive, and inaccessible through appropriate communication channels.
The initiative aims to establish a Community and Climate Impact Hub in north-central Washington, in collaboration with Wenatchee CAFE and other community partners. This Hub will foster ongoing partnerships among community leaders, stakeholders, and researchers, ensuring the continuity of efforts beyond the project’s funding period. Together, the group will create a toolkit to enhance community engagement and improve the accessibility and relevance of messaging about smoke and other heat-related climate impacts in Chelan, Okanogan, Grant, and Douglas counties.
Goals:
- Empower At-Risk Communities: Improve awareness and response strategies for health risks from climate impacts.
- Develop Responsive Messaging: Create culturally relevant, accessible materials about smoke and heat-related health risks.
- Build Lasting Partnerships: Establish a resilient Community and Climate Impact Hub to sustain climate adaptation efforts.
Approach:
- Community-Led Collaboration: Engage local leaders and organizations through Wenatchee CAFE to co-develop resources.
- Toolkit Creation: Design practical tools for community engagement and health-focused messaging tailored to regional needs.
- Sustainable Impact: Ensure the Hub and toolkit support long-term resilience against climate risks.
