2024 EarthLab Internship FlyerEarthLab summer internships offer a robust, cohort-based experience for University of Washington undergraduate students. Undergraduate students enrolled in a degree-granting program at a UW campus (Bothell, Seattle, or Tacoma) as of Spring Quarter 2024 from a variety of disciplines are encouraged to apply. Timeline for 2024 Summer Internships

All times are Pacific. Timeline was last amended 1.10.24.

January 11 Internship positions announced.

March 1 Applications due by 5 p.m.

March 15 Applicants will be notified whether they are invited to interview for the internship positions.

Mid – Late March Interviews will be scheduled.

Mid April Candidates will be notified of selection.

June 12 Kick-off Orientation (1 hour on Zoom).

June 17 – August 16 9-week internship period, including weekly cohort meetings every Tuesday from 9 am – 1 pm.

August 16 Program celebration and student presentations. 



Meet the Cohort 3 Interns

Payton Curley, Climate Health Risk Tool Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Science major and Business Administration minor, UW Seattle

Payton Curley (she/her) is a recent university of Washington graduate with a bachelors in environmental science and minor in business administration. Growing up in a small mountain town she has always been connected to the outdoors and passionate about environmental justice. During her at UW, her passion has only grown. Payton hopes to use business tactics to create a more equitable and sustainable world. As Climate Health Risk Tool intern with the Center for Health and the Global Environment (CHanGE), she is excited to develop user interface skills and contribute to the fight against health disparities related to climate change.

Cordy Plymale, Climate Health Risk Tool Intern

B.A. Public Health-Global Health Honors major and Business Administration minor, UW Seattle

Cordy PlymaleCordy Plymale (she/her) is a rising junior pursuing Public Health-Global Health Honors with a minor in Business Administration. Helping others has always been a major value of hers that continues to grow as she immerses herself in volunteering communities that reveal health disparities experienced by vulnerable populations. She is passionate about utilizing public health policy, outreach, evidence-based approaches, and systems evaluation to address social determinants of health and reduce unnecessary suffering. In the future, she hopes to pursue a Master of Public Health in administration or policy. During her free time, she enjoys hiking, running, and exploring Seattle with friends! Cordy is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with EarthLab and CHanGE as a Climate Health Risk Tool Intern to further their missions surrounding climate resilience and equitable health action. Working with an interdisciplinary team while consulting a wide range of disciplines as she works with the CHaRT tool represents an amazing opportunity for her to utilize innovative approaches to reduce health risks and promote climate action.

Anusriya Rahman Ornie, Flood Warning Analysis Intern

B.Sc. Bioengineering major and Applied Mathematics and Chemistry double minor, UW Seattle

Ornie (she/her) is a third-year undergraduate majoring in Bioengineering and minoring in Applied Mathematics and Chemistry at UW. As an international student from Bangladesh, she actively participates in leadership development programs. Currently, she contributes to meaningful initiatives for international and STEM students through her involvement in CIRCLE SAB and SEBA and promotes awareness of her minority ethnicity through BSA. Ornie is eager to apply her acquired skills to real-world challenges and make a significant impact. She is excited about collaborating with EarthLab and CIG to enhance flood warning analysis, addressing a critical issue that affects not only her home country but also the global community. In her leisure time, she enjoys exploring new cafes, reading, watching movies and TV, and embarking on new adventures.

Lupita Ocampo, Water Regulation Research Intern

B.A. Public Health-Global Health major and Labor Studies and Geography double minor, UW Seattle

Lupita Ocampo (they/them) is an upcoming senior majoring in Public Health-Global Health with minors in Labor Studies and Geography at the University of Washington Seattle. They are passionate about bridging accessible and equitable modes of health to marginalized communities. They are interested in building stronger foundations within social determinants of health in hopes to equip people’s autonomy over their health. They are excited to work with the Climate Impacts Group and Oregon Rural Action to support their research on discrepancies of clean water in rural areas. In their free time they enjoy reading, recently sci-fi, and creatively writing outside!

Caroline Hale, Climate Justice Academy Curriculum and Coordination Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Studies and Sociology double major, UW Seattle

Caroline HaleCaroline Hale (she/her) is joining EarthLab as the Climate Justice Academy Curriculum and Coordination Intern working with the Climate Impacts Group. She is a rising senior at the University of Washington in Seattle, double majoring in Environmental Studies and Sociology. Her interests converge at the intersection of the natural world and sociological dynamics. Throughout her academic journey, Caroline has worked in collaboration with faculty members on research projects related to her degrees and is looking forward to supporting research with the Climate Impacts Group. Caroline is excited to unite the perspectives of both her degrees in this internship by assisting and participating in conversations around climate justice.

Cora Schultz, Community Led Storytelling and Film Production Intern

B.A. Geography: Cities, Citizenship, and Migration and Dance double major, UW Seattle

Cora SchultzCora Schultz (she/her) is an upcoming senior studying Geography: Cities, Citizenship, and Migration and Dance at University of Washington. Her work and interests emphasize the role of art in creating life affirming spaces. She is passionate about the body’s relationship to its surroundings, specifically how the body relates to the mind and land. She is excited to bring her skillset to the Community Led Storytelling and Film Production internship at EarthLab, in particular, focusing on storytelling as an art, an act of vulnerability, and a call to action.

Hope Flanigan, Healthcare Savings of Time Spent in Nature Interns

B.A. Public Health – Global Health major, UW Seattle

Hope FlaniganHope Flanigan (she/her) is a rising senior at the University of Washington, studying Public Health – Global Health. This summer, she is excited to work as one of the Healthcare Savings of Time Spent in Nature interns alongside the Nature and Health team. Growing up in Washington, her passion for the outdoors began at an early age. In college, this passion grew as she began to learn more about the connections between access to nature and health outcomes within communities. As a result, Hope is eager to work with communities to increase access to green spaces and promote outdoor accessibility. In her future career as a public health practitioner, she hopes to collaborate with communities to make research more accessible and bridge the gaps of research implementation. In her free time, Hope enjoy hiking, making pottery, and listening to music.

Chikita Nigam, Healthcare Savings of Time Spent in Nature Interns

B.Sc. Environmental Studies and Political Science double major, UW Seattle

Chikita NigamChikita Nigam (she/her) is a third-year student at the University of Washington where she is pursuing a double major in Environmental Studies and Political Science. Originally from India, Chikita moved to Seattle for college and quickly fell in love with the lush landscapes and vibrant culture of the Pacific Northwest. Her academic focus is deeply rooted in addressing global environmental issues through effective policy-making and governance. She is especially driven to explore the intersection of climate policy and social justice, aiming to develop equitable solutions that protect communities disproportionately impacted by environmental changes. Beyond her studies, Chikita is a trained Indian Classical singer, a passion that keeps her connected to her cultural heritage and enhances her creativity. She’s also an avid traveler, values quality time with friends, and savors exploring Seattle’s vibrant culinary scene.

Isabella Showman, Climate Change & Dissolved Oxygen Vulnerability Intern

B.Sc. Atmospheric and Climate Science: Climate major and Oceanography minor, UW Seattle

Isabella ShowmanIsabella Showman (she/her) is an upcoming junior studying Atmospheric Sciences: Climate and planning to minor in Oceanography at the University of Washington Seattle Campus. She is excited to be working with the Puget Sound Institute and School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences this summer as this year’s Climate Change & Dissolved Oxygen Vulnerability Intern. She grew up just outside of Seattle and has developed a passion for climate science, marine ecosystems, and sustainability. She hopes to contribute to management decisions surrounding nutrient loading and learn how Puget Sound species are affected by low dissolved oxygen. In her free time, she loves hiking, skiing, and spending time outdoors.

Iris Miller-Sherman, Collaborative Leadership Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Science and Law Societies and Justice double major, UW Seattle

Iris Miller-ShermanIris Miller-Sherman (they/them) is an aspiring environmental lawyer and activist, joining EarthLab as a Collaborative Leadership intern with the Puget Sound Institute. They are currently studying Environmental Science and Law Societies and Justice at the University of Washington Seattle campus. Iris is passionate about environmental justice and the intersectionalities between science and policy. They are very excited for the opportunity to create meaningful change. They enjoy playing guitar, reading and baking in their free time!

Mary Flynn, Editorial Assistant Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Science and Marine Biology double major, UW Seattle

Mary FlynnMary Flynn (she/her) is a student at the University of Washington studying Environmental Science and Marine Biology. She is joining Earthlab as an Editorial Assistant for the Puget Sound Institute, where she hopes to apply her passions for science communication and environmental justice. Mary is looking forward to working with the PSI to help improve public understanding of how rising sea levels are affecting estuarine habitats. In her free time, Mary enjoys reading and exploring Seattle with her friends.

Nina Pursai, Conservation Science Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Studies major and Law, Society, and Justice and American Indian Studies double minor, UW Seattle

Nina PursaiNina is an upcoming senior studying Environmental Studies with minors in Law, Society, and Justice and American Indian Studies at the University of Washington. She is very excited to work with The Nature Conservancy this summer as a Conservation Science Intern. Growing up in the Bay Area, California, Nina has always loved the outdoors and has enjoyed being amongst redwoods and sandy beaches. Moving to Seattle and taking courses at UW has deeply shaped her passion for conservation, specifically within old-growth forests and sustainable agriculture. She aims to explore her intersectional interests in environmental justice, restoration, and policy in this internship, and hopes to someday get her master’s in environmental studies. In her free time, Nina loves to visit local coffee shops, volunteer at a farm, play volleyball, and hang out with her cat, Pumpkin!

McKenna Sweet, Conservation Science Intern

B.Sc. in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology & B.A. in Journalism and Public Interest Communication, UW Seattle

McKenna SweetMcKenna Sweet (she/her) is an upcoming senior in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology, as well as Journalism and Public Interest Communication at the University of Washington-Seattle. After working in natural resource management last summer in the Midwest, she fell in love with fieldwork that allowed her to meet different species, such as milkweed and freshwater mussels. This summer, she is excited to continue conservation work and learn more about local ecosystems with The Nature Conservancy. McKenna loves sharing her knowledge of native and invasive species, as well as learning about them from others. In her free time, she enjoys walks, swimming, and playing her trumpet.

Brianna Blanchard, Storytelling for Social Change Intern

B.Sc. Environmental Public Health major, UW Seattle

Brianna BlanchardBrianna Blanchard (she/her), studying Environmental Public Health at the University of Washington, Seattle, is thrilled to join EarthLab’s 2024 cohort as the Storytelling for Social Change intern. Following her undergraduate studies, Brianna will be pursuing a Master’s in Environmental Engineering where she plans on continuing to merge her academic interests with her passions for environmental science, engineering, human health, communication, social justice, and the arts. Her upbringing in Washington State fostered a deep connection with nature, and also sparked a long-term commitment to creating sustainable communities, intending to uplift marginalized voices in the conversation of climate change. Outside of academics, she enjoys painting, clay making, hip-hop performance dance, spending time with her dogs, and playing as a flute musician for the UW Concert Band. Brianna looks forward to merging her technical skills with her creative interests, ultimately working towards showcasing EarthLab’s mission and amplifying new research in an innovative and accessible manner.

Gabriela Palma, Storytelling for Social Change Intern

B.A. Communication major and Environmental Health minor, UW Seattle

Gabriela PalmaGabriela Palma (she/her) comes from the University of Washington Seattle campus, where she majored in communication and minored in environmental health. With her passion for environmental communication, she is very excited to be joining EarthLab as the Storytelling for Social Change Intern. Gabriela hopes to work on amplifying community voices that are working towards a more sustainable environment. During her free time, she enjoys traveling and going to concerts.

Karina Lai, Ocean Acidification Intern

B.Sc. Marine Biology major and Oceanography minor, UW Seattle

Karina LaiKarina Lai (she/her) is a student at the University of Washington Seattle majoring in marine biology with a minor in oceanography. She is interested in research topics such as the environmental effects of climate change on plankton. Karina is very excited to work as the ocean acidification intern with EarthLab and WOAC to learn more about working with oceanographic and plankton data. She looks forward to being involved in the internship’s interdisciplinary discussions and seminars about environmental justice. Outside of academics, she enjoys many activities such as drawing, reading, crocheting, and exploring new places.

Jordan Clancy, Ocean Literacy Intern

B.Sc. Oceanography, UW Seattle

Jordan ClancyJordan Clancy (she/her) is a first-generation college student and upcoming senior studying oceanography at the University of Washington, Seattle. She is eager to join EarthLab and WOAC as the Ocean Literacy Intern this summer as it aligns with her professional goal of becoming a secondary school science teacher. Jordan strives to eliminate barriers in education and this internship will grant her the opportunity to create a middle school lesson plan that promotes equity, accessibility, and inclusivity for a subject she is passionate about. Her background growing up near the coast in Texas and serving in the Navy fueled her interests in education, marine science, and environmental justice. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, gardening, solving puzzles, and playing video games with her husband.
