UW Board of Regents votes to exit direct fossil fuel investments by 2027
The University of Washington Board of Regents on Thursday approved a resolution to begin exiting all direct investments in fossil-fuel companies with the goal of complete divestiture by Fiscal Year 2027. Ben Packard, chair of the ACSRI and executive director of EarthLab at the UW, is quoted.

Next week, UW will be sending researchers to the 2022 United Nations Ocean Conference, which will take place in Lisbon, Portugal from June 27-July 1. This five-day conference will seek to advance momentum around science-based innovative solutions related to global ocean action within the UN Sustainable Development Goal #14: “to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.”
In partnership with the UW Office of Global Affairs, researchers from The Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Center and the Washington Ocean Acidification Center – two EarthLab member organizations within the UW College of the Environment – will be presenting their research in real time (both virtually and in-person) at the conference.

GardenPro Wins EarthLab Community Impact Prize at Alaska Airlines Environmental Innovation Challenge
The $5,000 UW EarthLab Community Impact Prize, which recognizes environmental innovations that make communities more resilient in the face of climate change while prioritizing equity and justice, went to team GardenPro from UW. The team of social sciences, electric and computer engineering, and business students is developing a platform focused on making home gardening and hydroponics more affordable and accessible.
