A multi-disciplinary team, funded by the EarthLab Innovation Grants program, has been working to help with the transition to safer chemicals for cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing food trucks in Washington. In recognition of their efforts, the Clean Safety & Health in Food Trucks (Clean SHiFT) team received a 2022 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

4. EarthLab welcomes four new advisory council members

The Advisory Council is a body of volunteers from diverse professions and backgrounds that provides unique perspectives to help inform our programming, introduce new potential collaborators, and raise awareness and financial support for EarthLab. The Council works to connect decision makers outside of academia to UW resources. Welcome, Trish, Kate, Chukundi and Bob! We can’t wait to start collaborating together in this next chapter of advisory support.

The idea to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first proposed at the 1977 UN Conference by Indigenous advocates. Since then, more than a dozen states and hundreds of cities have adopted the day. This year, EarthLab shared several resources for folks wishing to learn more about the history, the resilience, and contributions of Native Americans spanning generations.

2. Sparking Climate Connections: UW Lightning Talks on Climate Chance recordings are now available!

In Fall Quarter of 2022, we invited faculty and researchers to submit a one-minute video recording – a lightning talk – summarizing their work. This call was amplified by the event’s 18 co-sponsors. We received a total of 105 lightning talks covering 16 different themes representing over 55 departments across the UW tri-campus. Learn more and watch the videos now!

Now Hiring: EarthLab Data Scientist

EarthLab is seeking a full-time Data Scientist for research on outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism. The employee will join a team of researchers and practitioners who develop novel methods and information to inform public land management and improve opportunities for outdoor recreation. The successful candidate will advance methods that mix traditional survey methods with data from citizen science, social media, and mobile applications to more effectively measure visitation to public lands and generate fine-scale maps of where and how people recreate outdoors.  The Data Scientist will be responsible for developing, improving, and maintaining existing analysis workflows. They will also be involved in many aspects of data management, analysis, and visualization to support projects with academic, governmental, and NGO partners.  The successful candidate will be an organized, friendly, self-directed individual who is passionate about working on collaborative projects for social good.

“The stars have moved”: how climate change is impacting the planet at multiple scales


Now Hiring: Communications & Engagement Specialist (Project/Temporary)

EarthLab is accepting applications for a Communications and Engagement Specialist. This is a .8 FTE position with the expectation of a Monday-Thursday work schedule. The project is expected to start on May 1, 2022 and last between 6-9 months, though it may be extended. The monthly salary range for this position at .8 FTE is between $4480-$4800 and this position qualifies for full benefits.

Using visuals and written word, this position is instrumental in educating/sharing stories about EarthLab’s mission and programs and amplifying voices of our eight member organizations and community within and outside of the UW. We are looking for an individual who is extremely organized, highly collaborative, exhibits attention to detail, is comfortable being responsible for several tasks simultaneously, engages with audiences/people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and will welcome new challenges. With support from supervisors, the specialist will manage multiple projects that require different degrees of independence and team-based collaboration.

The Temporary Communications & Engagement Specialist will report to the EarthLab Executive Director, supporting the execution of EarthLab communications strategies and helping to increase and diversify our engagement with a wide variety of stakeholders.
