As a recent graduate from the University of Washington with a degree in Communication and Environmental Health, my passion for science communication stems from a desire to learn about environmental health, share this knowledge with my friends and family, and address the gap between the scientific community and the public.
Science communication is not just about articulating complex scientific issues; it’s also about making science accessible and encouraging people to be part of the solutions.

These three words are the foundation of EarthLab’s mission, which explains that developing innovative, just, and equitable solutions to environmental challenges comes from bridging expertise, partnerships, and resources at UW with the wider community. This past summer, I considered this phrase deeply.

EarthLab connects various communities, sectors and disciplines with the UW to create equitable solutions to climate change. Understanding the big picture of how the EarthLab does that work, however, and seeing how the pieces connect, is more complicated.

Consider applying to the Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative’s first-ever Science Justice Summer School! This two-week program will dive into a range of justice-related topics through lectures, discussion groups and more. Applications close Monday, March 4 at 11:59 p.m.
The Science Justice Summer School will run from July 10-24, 2024, on the University of Washington campus in Seattle. The summer school is open to second-year master’s students, Ph.D. students, and postdoctoral fellows from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields as well as those in the social sciences and humanities.

Interns are often unpaid, which limits who can participate in these opportunities.
