Exhibit at UW Explores the Intersection of Art, Health and Environment in the Peruvian Amazon

Since time immemorial, people in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest have been living on or near the river floodplains, creating symbiotic cultures echoing the rhythms of the rich biodiversity that are found in this rainforest. However, recent centuries have brought resource exploitation and colonization to this area, which has forced hundreds of thousands to migrate from the deep jungle to Iquitos—a jungle city of half a million people and the largest in the world accessible only by river.

Native American Heritage Month 2023: Resources and Activities

November is Native American Heritage Month -- a time to acknowledge and celebrate the history, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in our communities in the past, present and future. In Seattle (and on the UW campus), we're fortunate to have many nearby opportunities to listen, learn, donate, and act in solidarity to create a more just and equitable future. Population Health Initiative, EarthLab event builds cross-disciplinary climate change connections

The Population Health Initiative and EarthLab hosted approximately 45 University of Washington faculty, staff and graduate students in an Open Space-style event in the UW wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House on October 23, 2023, to help facilitate the development of new interdisciplinary collaborations to take on pressing climate-related challenges. This was the second Fostering Climate Change Connections event, following the inaugural offering that took place on April 11, 2023.

Taking hopeful action for win-win climate change and mental health policies

EarthLab was honored to be invited by the OECD Wise Centre and the UW Environment and Well-Being Lab to co host a public workshop dedicated to better understanding the connection between climate change and mental health and the policies we can develop to improve lives. On September 19, 2023, fifteen panelists shared new research and personal experiences to help uncover the complex pathways linking climate change and mental health, hopeful actions led by community, tribal knowledge, and barriers and successes in local, state and national policy.

The Population Health Initiative and EarthLab will again co-host an Open Space-style event in the wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House on 10/23/23 to facilitate the development of new interdisciplinary collaborations to take on pressing climate-related challenges. Register Now for the Climate - Mental Health Nexus: How a Well-Being Approach Can Provide Lessons for Win-Win Policies

Join the University of Washington’s EarthLab, the Environment and Well-Being Lab and the OECD WISE Centre in a half-day public workshop on the intersection of climate change and mental health. The event will uncover the complex pathways linking climate change to worsening mental health outcomes, including new forms of distress. It will also showcase the restorative and protective aspects of nature, and the ways in which climate action can be leveraged to promote positive mental health outcomes.
